Church Row, Hampstead
This compact fifth-floor flat on Church Row, Hampstead, opens to far-reaching views across the London skyline.
Within, the kitchen and principal bedroom traded places, unlocking a new en-suite bedroom and a more considered use of the plan. The brief called for an interior that felt light, understated and enduring rather than driven by trends.
The building's acoustic requirements called for carpet throughout, setting a warm, neutral base that the rest of the palette — natural stone and antique brass — was chosen to sit alongside.
New interventions are deliberately quiet, allowing the original cornicing, arched niche and fireplace to take precedence.
Beneath the sloping roofline — where every centimetre had to work hard — careful planning made room for a combi boiler, washer-dryer, generous storage and a shower room considerably larger than the one it replaced, complete with built-in seating.
The result is a calm, quietly resolved home where practical requirements, existing character and new interventions sit comfortably together.
